I’ll post spring-break-in-Delaware photos soon, but first here are some pictures I made of the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C.
Jeff and I rushed back to D.C. on Sunday morning just to see the cherry blossoms. I was adamant about seeing them, since I’d never been in the area during the blossoming period and didn’t know when I would be again.
Getting to the National Mall was a nightmare. Jeff insisted that we’d be okay with driving (I’d thought we’d park at his house and take the Metro). Then we discovered that roads were blocked for the annual 10-miler, so we had to take the long way around (and again, and again) to get back to the Mall. Finding a parking space was a struggle only to be matched by dealing with the throngs of SLR- and stroller-wielding tourists (and realizing that we were among them, albeit without a stroller).
And then we finally arrived… and the cherry blossoms were white. The few pink-blossom trees were pretty pitiful. Major letdown.
But hey, now I’ve finally seen the much-beloved cherry blossoms. Next time I get to see them, though, I hope they’re pink. Because any schoolchild who knows anything about the D.C. cherry blossoms knows that they’re supposed to be pink.
I will apologize for being one of the 15,000 runners who caused the streets to be closed!
The secret of observing the blossoms is to get their incredibly early (~6am), NOT on the day of the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler. Then you can park.
As to the color, the blossoms are mostly white with bits of pink in them. The sight of the trees around the Tidal Basin is still my all-time favorite DC experience…and I’m a native!
Aw David, no need to apologize! We’d been on a news blackout for the past half-week, and should’ve checked traffic routes and blockages before we came out.
I doubt I’ll make it to the blossoms at dawn — at least, not this year — but good to know about parking. And are the blossoms always mostly white? I’ve always seen photos of pink-blossomed trees, and pink is definitely the predominant color of the festival’s website. #falseadvertising?
The color of the blossoms you saw is what they always look like. Tinges of pink if the light is right, but mostly white. Still beautiful, no? But I guess you are caught up in the #falseadvertising issue. 🙂
As the protagonist in one of my guilty-pleasure rom-com says: “I feel like I just found out my favorite love song was written about a sandwich.” So disappointed.
Mmmm, a good tomato/basil/mozzarella panini…. What were we talking about again? 😉
