This was the decisive, final game in the league championship series. Serious business was on the line, folks.
And this was the weirdest double-play photo I have ever taken in my life:

© 2011 by The York Daily Record/Sunday News. Glen Rock's Tim Frisch throws the ball to first base for a double-play after tagging out Manchester's Chris Langley at second base, as Manchester's Andy Clemens, foreground and left, runs to first in the third inning of the final, decisive game of the Central League Championship Series on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, in Glen Rock Community Park in Shrewsbury Township. Manchester defeated Glen Rock 4-2 to win the series.
Re-read the caption if you have to.
Seriously, the weirdest double-play photo I’ve ever made.
I seriously have looked at this picture and reread the caption a dozen times but I dont get it. Is it the awkward looking slide? Is it how long it’s taking the dude to get to first base (considering this is the final decisive game)? This is driving me crazy…..
I’m assuming you understand what’s going on in the photo and that my thinking it’s “weird” is what’s throwing you off. Basically: Most of my double-play photos have been taken from first base, with a clear shot at second base. This photo was taken from a much different angle. What makes this photo weird to me is, I’ve never been in a position to catch all three actions of the slide into second, the second baseman’s throw to first AND the first-base runner.
haha ok, now it makes sense(and I feel dumb) and I actually have a better appreciation for this picture and how one picture looked at from different perspectives of baseball and photography can have two totally different meanings for people. thanks for the clarification!
It’s okay — and you weren’t alone! At about the same time you commented, a fellow photojournalist and former classmate actually messaged me privately with the same question of, “What makes this photo so weird?” So I’m glad you posted your question and gave me an opportunity to clarify.
