Earlier this evening, the security guard at Poynter spotted something neat outside in the Poynter courtyard.
It was an egret!
It was gorgeous and regal, and from the front, it appears to be an almost comically thin bird.
I took more photos of it than just this. The damn thing was practically posing for me. But it sure was a beauty.
Great Egret, to be precise. If you want an opportunity to see a lot of birds nearby, go to Fort DeSoto park–it’s a Pinellas County park (free, although there is a toll bridge to get there). It would take about 25 minutes to get there from Poynter, but it’s gorgeous. And, if you don’t care for going after the (redicuoulsly tame) birds that will let you crawl up for a portrait, there’s always laying in the sun like everyone else at the beach.
Here’s how to get there: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Anderson+Blvd&daddr=Poynter+Institute+For+Media,+Saint+Petersburg,+FL&hl=en&geocode=FQ1hpQEd7ZYR-w%3B&gl=us&mra=ls&sll=27.644606,-82.70834&sspn=0.073904,0.154324&ie=UTF8&z=11

David — I love that I can count on you to properly identify wildlife in my photos. I have no time for such an excursion on this side of Friday, but I do have all of next week! Thanks, DK!
