I’ve recently made a few pictures — each for different assignments — in which certain objects appear to be floating. I’d like to think that I’m magical.
Here’s the first such picture:

The Duffy family lost electricity in their Springettsbury Township home during the snowstorm on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. Because their youngest son Joey is fed via a feeding tube due to esophogeal stricture, Tom Duffy purchased a generator in Dec. 2010 to power the feeding tube pump in case the house lost power. When their block lost power, the Duffy family rotated the generator to power Joey's feeding tube, the refrigerator and the house's heat in turns.
When my editor and I looked over my takes from this assignment, she paused on this photo.
“I am mesmerized by the floating teddy bear” was her comment.
But we both knew this wasn’t a lead photo.

I wasn’t supposed to cover Penn State’s final home game.

But things fall apart, and I was sent to State College on Friday night to cover the PSU Hope candlelight vigil and to stay through Saturday to cover the last home game of the season.
Which was also senior day.
Which was also the first game without Joe Paterno since 1950.
Any game is a potentially emotional rollercoaster, and for four hours, the mood in Beaver Stadium fluctuated between contemplation, resilience, hope and sorrow.

On Tuesday morning, Penn State seniors Kyle Harris and Jess Severs decided to plan a candlelight vigil in honor of the youth who were allegedly sexually abused by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
On Friday night, thousands of students, alumni, faculty and members of the State College community gathered for the vigil.

A (stray?) bullet hits a horse. But not just any horse.

This photo shows the wound sustained by Witten, a 19-year-old Belgian horse owned by Amy Burkholder of Paradise Township, several days after he was shot in his right hindquarter while grazing on a Peach Bottom Township pasture on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011. Burkholder said the muscular horse, who measures at 18 hands and is a retired Amish workhorse, probably felt the bullet as a bee sting and was still standing when she discovered the bullet wound the next day. Burkholder has owned Witten for about a year and said she cleaned the wound and expects the scar tissue to eventually push the bullet out.
In posting this photo, I thought really hard to incorporate some Roy Rogers references — his dog is named Bullet, his horse is named Trigger and his song “Happy Trails” is a good-bye song — but I just couldn’t make it work. Maybe someone out there can help me out.

Some girls completely dominated the guys in a shooting competition, which I think is pretty badass.

A few weeks ago, I was sent to a local theatre’s costume shop to make pictures of people searching for costumes to rent for Halloween. Personally, I’m not a big Halloween person… and, it would seem, neither is this woman’s daughter.

I’d always considered The Nebraska Game to be the/my standard of the/my Index of Bodily Misery While Photographing A Sports Event.
Shooting The Nebraska Game at Missouri in 2009 meant four hours in 50 degrees, wind and rain. Despite my new rainjacket (which I still have) and my best efforts to stay warm and dry, I was soaked to the skin by halftime and had to peel my clothes off when I finally returned home that night. It made for good photos, but the experience wasn’t something I’d like to repeat.
Hello, Saturday. Hello, snowfall. Throughout the entire game.
Thick, wet, mushy snow.

Justin Carbaugh was convicted of killing his older brother and Paige's son Brandon and dismembering his fingers and one of his legs in Aug. 2010. Following the verdict, Paige Carbaugh expressed gratitude to defense attorney Steve Rice. "People who know me know I would never make up something or lie about one of my children to save another one," said Carbaugh, who said she was satisfied with the verdict.

I began the York Revolution’s 2011 season as the photo intern at The York Dispatch and ended it as a full-time staff photojournalist at The York Daily Record.
It’s been an interesting journey. Slowly but surely, as I followed the Revolution from spring training to their Atlantic League Championship win, I became a better baseball photographer, as well another of the team’s and fans’ superstitions.
I am so glad and thankful that I had the opportunities to do this.

I was unaware of this until I read Steve’s column, but the York Revolution were once the worst team in the league.
As of yesterday, they are now a back-to-back Atlantic League Championship team.

Game 4 of the 2011 Atlantic League Championship series was called off after an hour-long rain delay.
Of course, rain delays, game postponement and a damp 50-degree clime don’t let a newspaper photographer off the hook: We still need to make pictures.

The York Revolution are playing a best-of-five against the Long Island Ducks for the 2011 Atlantic League Championship. With their second series victory in Game 3 last night, the Revs are set to clinch the championship if they win tonight’s game.
I feel all right about the action shots I got last night, but my favorites are features. Go figure.
